Walnut wonder
chicago Illinois Completed 2025
MPink Design LLC. provided the architectural and interior design work on this condo renovation in a prominent high rise located just off Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. The use of walnut cabinetry was a central material design thread of the project and connects pieces in the Kitchen, Bar and Primary Bathroom. The Owners wanted a modern feel without sacrificing some of the existing elements of the home.
A impactful design approach here was the reconfiguration of the Kitchen including pushing back the East wall and removing the wall to the South. Enlarging the kitchen’s width allowed for a larger island and more continuous storage. Space was borrowed from the living room in order to accomplish this. A new deep portal was created between the Living room and the Kitchen while the existing opening between the Living Room and Dining Room was also enlarged. The South wall between the Dining Room and Kitchen was removed, creating an open layout and a allowing for a view of the Chicago skyline from the Kitchen.
At the corner of the Kitchen, a large appliance cabinet wall can be opened for access and closed for a quieter look while a custom bookcase and display cabinet flanks the pantry wall to break up the length of cabinetry.
At the Primary Bathroom, a long vanity appears to float off the wall, which is accentuated by a light underneath the toekick. Other spaces included in the renovation were the new secondary bathroom (a former powder room turned second bath), laundry room, and bedrooms. The family room, which originally was built as a bedroom, was converted back into a bedroom with added lighting, fresh coats of paint and additional closets.
