Belmont

Lakeview, Chicago Illinois    Completed 2006

The renovation of this 1890’s condo is ongoing and has consisted of alterations to the basement level, the first floor bathroom and the addition of a fourth bedroom as well as the remodeling of the Master Bedroom.

The original basement level was cut up, and accessed from a dark cramped spiral stair. The new layout accommodates an office, a family/media area, a children’s playroom, and a guest room; all in 720 sqft. A new curving steel and wood stair in the window bay, allows natural light to pour in from above while a large sliding wood door separates the guest room from the den and remains open most of the time, enlarging the perceived space as well as acting as a piece of art work.

A fourth bedroom was added by reconfiguring the existing dressing room and walk-in closet on the first floor. Space was saved by incorporating a large custom built-in wall of closets in the Master Bedroom. New trim for the windows and doors was fabricated to match existing millwork in the home.

The renovated bathroom is calming and clean with soft sage green subway tiles and a natural slate floor. New oak cabinetry maximizes required storage space in the small room and the existing turn of the century sink was reused to tie the old and new together.
